Navigating New PR Client Red Flags
May 19, 2025Navigating New PR Client Red Flags 🚩
Not every potential client is the perfect fit, and sometimes the signs are there from the start!
Over the years, at LadyCPR, we have identified key indicators that suggest whether a collaboration will be smooth sailing or a turbulent journey.
Here’s our handy guide to vetting potential clients:
Expecting PR to be a Sales Engine: PR is all about building trust, telling compelling stories, and increasing visibility. If a client expects PR to directly translate into sales, they might not fully understand its true purpose.
Fixation on Vanity Metrics: It’s not just about publication numbers; it’s about targeting the right audience.
Demanding Instant Top-Tier Coverage: Everyone dreams of features in high-profile outlets, but effective PR takes time. Expecting immediate results without newsworthy angles or solid media connections might indicate a misunderstanding of the process.
Unclear Messaging or Positioning: If a client can’t clearly define their unique value, PR becomes an uphill battle. A strong brand identity is crucial for successful PR efforts.
Believing PR is a Cure-All: PR can’t fix a flawed product, leadership issues, or internal chaos. If a client believes media coverage will magically solve deep-seated problems, it’s likely to be a losing battle.
Seeking Guaranteed Coverage: Media coverage isn’t guaranteed and isn’t an ad slot. Clients looking for promises probably misunderstand how earned media works.
Micromanaging Every Step: While collaboration is vital, a client who insists on controlling every pitch might not trust PR expertise, signalling future conflicts.
Frequent Agency Hoping: If a client has cycled through several PR firms quickly, it’s wise to ask why. This often stems from unrealistic expectations, poor internal organisation, or a reluctance to commit to a long-term strategy.
PR thrives on mutual trust, strategic alignment, and realistic expectations. If these red flags appear early on, it might be best to reconsider the partnership!
